What is Alanine?

Alanine is a non-essential amino acid with the simplest chiral structure possible - its methyl side chain makes it the smallest chiral amino acid in the group. This structural simplicity gives alanine exceptional stability and makes it one of the most water-soluble members of the amino acid family, properties that make it a reliable contributor to both the NMF water-binding environment of the stratum corneum and the overall humectant system of a formula.

In the skin, alanine is present as a free amino acid within the natural moisturizing factor, where it is released as part of the filaggrin breakdown products that accumulate in the stratum corneum during normal keratinocyte differentiation. Its water-soluble, neutral character makes it a core hydration amino acid - less structurally specialized than proline or histidine, but present in healthy skin's NMF at meaningful concentrations and consistently associated with the surface hydration environment.

Alanine is also one of the most abundant non-essential amino acids in collagen, where it occupies many of the X and Y positions in the Gly-X-Y tripeptide sequence alongside proline and hydroxyproline. What does it do for skin?
