What are
Matrikynes®?
Matrikynes® are a patent-pending concentrate of over 315 bioactive matrikine peptides extracted from the extracellular matrix (ECM) of upcycled bovine bone - a zero-waste, sustainably sourced raw material. The term "matrikine" refers to peptides released from the ECM that carry biological signaling character - communicating with skin cells in ways associated with repair, regeneration, and structural reinforcement. These are not conventional cosmetic peptides synthesized to mimic a single signal; they are a complex, naturally occurring mixture of over 315 individual bioactive sequences derived from the same biological source as the skin's own ECM.
Matrikynes® were developed through a collaboration between Sweet Chemistry and Xylyx Bio, a tissue engineering company born out of Columbia University's Laboratory for Stem Cells and Tissue Engineering. The peptide technology was originally invented for surgical applications - specifically, to support the repair and rehabilitation of organ tissue. The discovery that these same matrikine peptides produced measurable, clinically significant improvements in skin appearance when applied topically led to the founding of Sweet Chemistry and the creation of the Max Repair System. Sweet Chemistry is the only skincare brand using this technology.
This is a fundamentally different category of peptide from anything else in the skincare market. Traditional cosmetic peptides are single synthetic sequences - Argireline, Matrixyl, copper tripeptides - each designed to target one pathway. Matrikynes® contain over 315 sequences, associated with multiple repair and regeneration signals simultaneously in a way no singular synthetic peptide can replicate.
What does
Matrikynes® do for the skin?
Matrikynes® are researched in connection with delivering ECM-derived matrikine signals to fibroblasts and keratinocytes in the viable epidermis and upper dermis. This signaling character is associated in research with a range of repair-related responses: the appearance of increased collagen and elastin density, support for the skin's hyaluronic acid environment, and a more resilient barrier surface. Because they originate from the same extracellular matrix environment that skin cells are designed to receive biological cues from, they are studied in connection with a compatibility that distinguishes them from synthetic single-peptide alternatives.
The appearance-related outcomes associated with Matrikynes® are supported by independent clinical study data from the Sweet Chemistry Max Repair System. Skin density - a marker associated with dermal collagen content - showed statistically significant improvement in 70% of subjects within 4 weeks. The appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles showed measurable improvement in 68% of subjects. Barrier function improved in 70% of subjects, barrier repair was measurable within 1 hour of application, and skin hydration improved in 89% of subjects. The appearance of hyperpigmentation improved in 73% of subjects. These results were observed without damage to the skin - no peeling, no inflammation, no required downtime. Individual results may vary.
The formulation approach that supports these outcomes is equally important. Matrikynes® are delivered within Sweet Chemistry's patent-pending emulsion systems, which for the first time allow over 4 times the number of actives found in traditional formulations to be included at functional concentrations. This means the 3% Matrikynes® concentration is not surrounded by filler ingredients; it operates within a formula where every other ingredient is also present at a meaningful level.

Found In
In All 4 Formulas at 3%
Matrikynes® is the only ingredient present at 3% in every product in the Sweet Chemistry Max Repair System. It is the foundational active of every formula - the reason the system exists.
Barrier Repairing Hydra-Serum 3% Matrikynes® Bone Peptides + 5% Industry Peptides - 1.0 oz / 30 ml
The lightest formula in the system. Matrikynes® are co-delivered with 5% industry peptides, 5% niacinamide, 3% pure ceramides, and 2% seaweed glycan in a 40%-active, water-based emulsion. For all skin types; use alone or layered under either cream.
Elasticity Reinforcing Hydra-Cream 3% Matrikynes® Bone Peptides + 5% Industry Peptides - 1.7 oz / 50 ml
The Hydra-Cream delivers Matrikynes® within a 40%-active emulsion alongside 2% THD ascorbate, a full ceramide/phytosphingosine/cholesterol barrier complex, and 1% amino acids. Cushioned satin finish for dry to normal skin.
Elasticity Reinforcing Lipid-Cream 3% Matrikynes® Bone Peptides + 5% Industry Peptides - 1.7 oz / 50 ml
The Lipid-Cream carries Matrikynes® within a 46%-active formula enriched with shea butter, sea buckthorn, and jojoba seed oil - the richest, most emollient formula in the lineup.
Barrier Repairing Oil-Serum 3% Matrikynes® Bone Peptides - 1.0 oz / 30 ml
The waterless Oil-Serum is the only formula without industry peptides alongside Matrikynes® - complemented by 7% THD ascorbate, 7% squalane, and a full anhydrous barrier lipid complex in a 100%-active, zero-carrier-oil base.
Works Together With
Stable Vitamin C THD Ascorbate INCI: Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate. Present at 2% in both creams and 7% in the Oil-Serum. THD ascorbate is an oil-soluble vitamin C derivative studied in connection with collagen-supportive activity and brightening. Synergy Note: Matrikynes® is associated with peptide signaling in connection with the collagen formation environment; THD ascorbate is studied as the vitamin C cofactor that the collagen cross-linking process is understood to depend on. These two actives address complementary aspects of the same visible goal.
Barrier Lipid Complex Ceramides (NP, AP, EOP, NG) INCI: Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP, Ceramide NG. Present at 3% across all four formulas as part of the complete barrier lipid system. Synergy Note: A more intact, lower-inflammation barrier environment is associated in research with a more receptive context for peptide activity. Ceramides support the structural surface conditions in which Matrikynes® works.
Vitamin B3 Niacinamide INCI: Niacinamide. At 5% in the Barrier Repairing Hydra-Serum. Studied in connection with barrier support, oil balance, and a more comfortable skin surface. Synergy Note: Niacinamide is researched in connection with reducing low-grade surface inflammation - creating a more settled skin environment associated with better conditions for the dermal-targeting activity of Matrikynes® peptides.
Universal Antioxidant Thioctic Acid (Alpha-Lipoic Acid) INCI: Thioctic Acid. Present in all three water-based formulas alongside Matrikynes®, studied in both water and oil phases in connection with free radical defense. Synergy Note: Free radical activity is associated with collagen matrix breakdown. By addressing oxidative stress, thioctic acid contributes to a more favorable environment for the collagen-supportive activity associated with Matrikynes® peptides.
