What is thioctic acid?

Thioctic acid, more widely known in the scientific literature as alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), is a naturally occurring sulfur-containing fatty acid that functions as a coenzyme in mitochondrial energy metabolism. What makes it particularly valuable in skincare formulation is a property that distinguishes it from most antioxidants: it is soluble in both water and oil. Most antioxidants are limited to one phase - vitamin C derivatives work in the water phase, vitamin E in the oil phase. Alpha-lipoic acid is studied across both, making it a broad-coverage addition to an antioxidant system.

ALA is produced endogenously in small amounts by the body and found in trace quantities in foods such as spinach, broccoli, and organ meats. In its reduced form (dihydrolipoic acid, or DHLA), it is researched as one of the more potent antioxidants available - with the studied ability to support the regeneration of other oxidized antioxidants including vitamin C, vitamin E, and glutathione back toward their active states. This regenerative character makes it not just an antioxidant contributor, but one that may extend the activity of the other antioxidants it is formulated with.

What does it do for skin?

Free radical activity in both phases is associated with accelerated breakdown of the skin's collagen structure, inflammatory signaling, and the visible markers of skin aging including fine lines, uneven tone, and loss of firmness. By covering both environments, thioctic acid is designed to provide broader antioxidant coverage than oil-phase or water-phase antioxidants alone.

Its possible role in supporting the activity of vitamin C is particularly relevant in the context of the Sweet Chemistry creams. In both creams, 2% THD ascorbate (an oil-soluble vitamin C derivative) is present alongside thioctic acid. Research on alpha-lipoic acid suggests it may help support the reduction of oxidized vitamin C back toward its active form - potentially extending vitamin C's functional contribution within the formula and on the skin beyond what the stated concentration alone would imply.

Research has also explored alpha-lipoic acid's association with NF-kB, a transcription factor studied in connection with pro-inflammatory pathways involved in UV-related skin change and chronic skin reactivity.
