What is jojoba seed oil?

Jojoba seed oil is a liquid wax ester cold-pressed from the seeds of Simmondsia chinensis, a hardy perennial shrub native to the Sonoran Desert of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Technically, jojoba is not an oil at all - it is a wax ester, meaning its molecular structure more closely resembles the wax esters found in human sebum than it does a conventional triglyceride oil. This structural distinction sets it apart from virtually every other botanical used in skincare.

Jojoba's liquid wax character gives it a number of properties that conventional plant oils lack. It is chemically stable and highly resistant to oxidative rancidity - where most plant oils degrade on exposure to heat, air, or light, jojoba retains its integrity over time, making it a reliable carrier in precision-formulated products. Its molecular weight and viscosity profile allow it to spread easily across the skin's surface without the heaviness associated with denser plant butters or carrier oils.

What does it do for skin?

As a wax ester, jojoba is studied in connection with a molecular compatibility with the skin's own sebum that most plant oils cannot claim. Sebum naturally contains approximately 25% wax esters - and the wax ester structure of jojoba means it may blend with the skin's surface lipids more readily than triglyceride oils, supporting a more balanced surface lipid environment without adding to the skin's comedogenic burden. This is one reason jojoba has a long track record of use across both dry and oily skin types.

At the barrier level, jojoba is associated with a reduction in trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) through a semi-occlusive lipid film, while remaining permeable enough that skin can breathe normally beneath it. Unlike mineral oil-based occlusives, jojoba's wax ester film is lightweight and absorbs without a greasy residue - making it well-suited to formulas that need to deliver emollient protection without compromising texture.

In the Oil-Serum specifically, jojoba works alongside squalane, shea oil, sea buckthorn, and a full barrier lipid complex to create a multi-lipid carrier environment that delivers 7% THD ascorbate, 3% Matrikynes® peptides, and the full anhydrous ceramide system to the skin. Its oxidative stability is particularly important in this context - in a 100%-active formula with no water to buffer sensitive actives, a stable carrier that does not oxidize or interact negatively with vitamin C is essential.

An oil-soluble vitamin C derivative associated with brightening and collagen-supportive activity. Synergy Note: THD ascorbate is oil-soluble and therefore naturally at home in a jojoba-based carrier.
