What is jojoba seed oil?

Jojoba seed oil is a liquid wax ester cold-pressed from the seeds of Simmondsia chinensis, a hardy perennial shrub native to the Sonoran Desert of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Technically, jojoba is not an oil at all - it is a wax ester, meaning its molecular structure more closely resembles the wax esters found in human sebum than it does a conventional triglyceride oil. This structural distinction sets it apart from virtually every other botanical used in skincare.

Jojoba's liquid wax character gives it a number of properties that conventional plant oils lack. It is chemically stable and highly resistant to oxidative rancidity - where most plant oils degrade on exposure to heat, air, or light, jojoba retains its integrity over time, making it a reliable carrier in precision-formulated products. What does it do for skin?
