What is resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring stilbene polyphenol produced by plants as a phytoalexin - a chemical defense compound synthesized in response to stress, UV exposure, or microbial attack. It is found in the skin and seeds of grapes, the roots of Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum), berries, and peanuts. In skincare formulation, resveratrol is one of the most extensively studied antioxidant actives of the past two decades, with research exploring its association with free radical neutralization, sirtuin-related pathways, and the appearance of skin aging.

Resveratrol's presence in skin research is particularly well-documented because of its studied ability to penetrate the stratum corneum and reach the viable epidermis, where it may exert intracellular effects - a characteristic that distinguishes it from many antioxidants that remain primarily surface-active. Its stability in formulation is generally supported when paired with vitamin C, vitamin E, and other polyphenols, which is why it appears across three Sweet Chemistry formulas as part of a coordinated enzymatic antioxidant network.

The resveratrol in Sweet Chemistry formulas is plant-derived and formulated alongside alpha-lipoic acid (thioctic acid) and CoQ10/ubiquinone for a multi-pathway antioxidant approach designed to address free radical activity across complementary biological environments simultaneously.

What does it do for skin?

Research on resveratrol has explored its association with SIRT1, a sirtuin protein studied in connection with cellular stress response and the gene expression environment related to collagen. Research in this area suggests that sirtuin-related pathways may influence how skin's inflammatory signals are modulated - and by extension, how quickly visible signs of environmental stress and aging may appear. This positions resveratrol as more than a conventional free radical scavenger; it is studied for its possible influence on the biological context in which visible aging occurs.

At the level of collagen appearance, resveratrol has been researched in connection with matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) activity - the enzymes associated with the breakdown of collagen and elastin - as well as with fibroblast activity. In the context of the Sweet Chemistry formulas, this research-based character makes resveratrol a useful complement to the Matrikynes® peptide complex, which targets the appearance of collagen density from a different angle.
