What is phenylalanine?
Phenylalanine is an essential aromatic amino acid, meaning the human body cannot produce it independently and it must be obtained through diet or, in the case of topical skin health, through external replenishment. It belongs to the family of naturally occurring compounds that together form part of the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF) - the complex system associated with maintaining hydration, suppleness, and the acid mantle within the stratum corneum.
In skincare formulation, phenylalanine is valued for its character as both an NMF component and a structural building block. Its aromatic benzyl side chain gives it a slightly different molecular profile from aliphatic amino acids like glycine or alanine, contributing to the breadth of the amino acid blend's collective function within the skin's hydration chemistry.
At Sweet Chemistry, phenylalanine is formulated as one of eleven amino acids within a 1% amino acid complex present across the Hydra-Serum, Hydra-Cream, and Lipid-Cream. What does it do for skin?
As a component associated with the skin's NMF, phenylalanine is studied in connection with the water-binding capacity of the stratum corneum. The NMF is a collection of hygroscopic molecules that forms naturally within the corneocyte as the cell differentiates - it includes free amino acids (of which phenylalanine is one), pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA), lactate, urea, and various ions. Together these compounds are understood to attract and hold water within the uppermost skin cells, supporting suppleness and the barrier environment across varying levels of environmental humidity.
When the NMF becomes depleted - through aging, over-cleansing, or a compromised barrier - the skin loses its intrinsic association with internal hydration maintenance, often appearing rough, tight, and more susceptible to surface irritation. Topical amino acid replenishment is studied in connection with restoring this reservoir, particularly when formulated alongside other NMF components like sodium PCA, sodium lactate, and PCA - all of which are present in the Sweet Chemistry water-based formulas.
Phenylalanine is also understood to be a precursor to tyrosine, which participates in various biological processes within the skin. Its primary contribution in topical formulation, however, remains NMF support and structural involvement within the broader amino acid system - working as part of a complete blend rather than in isolation.
