What is Ethylhexylglycerin?

Ethylhexylglycerin's co-preservative mechanism operates through surface activity at the microbial cell membrane level. What does it do for skin?
In topical application, ethylhexylglycerin contributes two distinct functions. By potentiating the activity of the other preservation system components, it allows the overall preservation approach to be effective at a lower total preservative concentration - a meaningful benefit for skin types that may be sensitive to higher preservative loads.
Its secondary function is skin conditioning. Ethylhexylglycerin's glycerin-derived structure gives it mild humectant-adjacent character - it is associated with contributing to the smooth, comfortable application feel of the formulas it is present in, working in subtle complement to the more active humectants like glycerin, sodium PCA, and hyaluronic acid. This skin-feel contribution is a secondary benefit rather than a primary claim, but it means ethylhexylglycerin earns its place in the formula through more than just preservation alone.
