Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid classified as essential - meaning the human body cannot synthesize it and must obtain it from external sources. In the skin, linoleic acid is one of the most critically important fatty acids, holding a structural role within the intercellular lipid matrix of the stratum corneum that no other fatty acid can replicate.
