What is linoleic?

Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated omega-6 fatty acid classified as essential - meaning the human body cannot synthesize it and must obtain it from external sources. In the skin, linoleic acid is one of the most critically important fatty acids, holding a structural role within the intercellular lipid matrix of the stratum corneum that no other fatty acid can replicate. It is the specific fatty acid found esterified at the omega position of Ceramide EOP - the acylceramide widely studied in connection with the architectural integrity of the lamellar bilayer. When linoleic acid is absent or depleted at this position, the structural character of the barrier lipid matrix may be compromised.

Beyond its ceramide-associated role, linoleic acid is a component of the skin's own sebum and a building block for the phospholipid membranes of skin cells. Its presence in the intercellular lipid environment is studied in connection with regulating the permeability of the stratum corneum and maintaining the fluidity and organization of the lipid bilayer at a molecular level.

At Sweet Chemistry, linoleic acid is present as a free fatty acid below the 1% line in the Hydra-Serum and Oil-Serum, and is also delivered at meaningful concentrations via the linoleic acid-rich botanical oils used throughout all four formulas - including rosehip, raspberry, cranberry, red raspberry, and evening primrose seed oils. What does it do for skin?

Linoleic acid's primary contribution in skincare is studied in connection with the lamellar lipid structure of the stratum corneum. Research on the skin's fatty acid composition has consistently associated linoleic acid deficiency with increased trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), a rougher surface texture, and reduced barrier resilience. Conversely, topical linoleic acid application is studied in connection with supporting the ceramide EOP-dependent barrier architecture and improving the measured properties of the barrier surface over time.

In acne-prone skin specifically, research has explored an association between reduced sebum linoleic acid concentrations and a more comedogenic sebum profile. By replenishing the skin's surface linoleic acid environment, topical linoleic acid is studied in connection with a more balanced sebum lipid character - one reason it is consistently preferred over oleic acid-dominant oils for oily and congestion-prone skin types.

Within Sweet Chemistry's four formulas, linoleic acid works in direct concert with the ceramide complex and cholesterol present in every product.
