What is Serine?
Serine is a non-essential amino acid characterized by a hydroxyl-containing side chain - the -CH2OH group that gives serine its polar, water-attracting character and distinguishes it from the non-polar aliphatic amino acids like alanine and valine in the same blend. This hydroxyl side chain makes serine one of the most hydrophilic amino acids in the group, contributing meaningfully to its NMF water-binding character and its role in the overall hydration environment of the skin's uppermost layers.

Serine is the starting material for the sphingoid base biosynthesis pathway - specifically, serine and palmitoyl-CoA are condensed by the enzyme serine palmitoyl transferase to begin the production of sphinganine, the precursor from which all ceramides are ultimately derived.
