What is Valine?

Valine is an essential branched-chain amino acid (BCAA), sharing its structural classification with isoleucine and leucine. Its isopropyl side chain is the smallest of the three BCAAs, giving it a compact but distinctly hydrophobic character. Like all essential amino acids, valine must be sourced externally - the body cannot synthesize it, making topical application a relevant route for supplementing the local amino acid environment of the stratum corneum alongside the dietary intake that reaches the skin systemically.

Valine is one of the more structurally prevalent amino acids in elastin - the protein responsible for the skin's elastic recoil and its ability to return to shape after deformation. Elastin's repetitive hydrophobic sequences rely heavily on valine, glycine, and alanine residues to create the coiled, spring-like tertiary structure that gives the protein its elastic properties. This association positions valine as relevant not only to the collagen-focused discussion of many skin actives, but to the elastin dimension of the skin's structural protein environment - a dimension that Matrikynes® peptides are also associated with through their ECM-derived signaling character.

At Sweet Chemistry, valine completes the branched-chain amino acid pair alongside isoleucine in the eleven-amino-acid complex, contributing both NMF hydration support and elastin-associated structural relevance to the same blend.

What does Valine do for the skin?

In topical application, valine contributes to the NMF amino acid fraction, broadening the hydrophobic amino acid coverage of the blend in a way that more closely reflects the actual free amino acid composition of healthy skin. Its branched-chain character also makes it a useful component of the keratin structural environment - valine is present in the alpha-helical regions of keratin filaments that give corneocytes their mechanical strength and resistance to physical stress.

As an elastin-associated amino acid, valine's presence in a formula that also delivers Matrikynes® ECM-derived peptides - which are associated in research with improvements in the appearance of both collagen density and elastin-related elasticity - creates a topical environment that addresses both the peptide signaling aspect and the local amino acid substrate aspect of the skin's structural protein system. This is a research-based rationale for the complete amino acid approach rather than a claim about the direct action of topical valine in isolation.

The clinical outcomes of the Sweet Chemistry Max Repair System - including the 91% self-assessed improvement in skin texture and the statistically significant improvements in skin density observed in 70% of subjects - reflect the cumulative contribution of the entire formula system, of which the amino acid complex including valine is one component. Individual results may vary.

FOUND IN

In 3 Formulas as Part of the 1% Amino Acid Blend

Valine is part of Sweet Chemistry's complete eleven-amino-acid NMF complex, contributing branched-chain amino acid coverage and elastin-associated structural relevance across all three water-based formulas.

WORKS TOGETHER WITH

Branched-Chain Amino Acid Isoleucine

INCI: Isoleucine.

The co-occurring branched-chain essential amino acid in the eleven-amino-acid blend. Synergy Note: Valine and isoleucine together provide complete branched-chain amino acid coverage - the two most relevant BCAAs for skin protein contexts, co-formulated to reflect the actual BCAA composition of healthy skin's NMF.

ECM Peptide Complex Matrikynes® Bone Peptides

INCI: Hydrolyzed Cow Bone Extract.

At 3% in all four formulas, associated with improvements in the appearance of skin density and aging signs including elasticity. Synergy Note: Valine is a structurally important amino acid in elastin - the ECM protein associated with skin's elastic appearance. Matrikynes® targets the ECM signaling environment; valine contributes to the local elastin amino acid pool in the same formula.

Collagen Amino Acid Glycine

INCI: Glycine.

The most abundant amino acid in collagen, present alongside valine in all three water-based formulas. Synergy Note: Glycine addresses the collagen structural environment while valine is particularly relevant to elastin - together they provide amino acid support for the two primary structural proteins of the dermis within the same blend.

NMF Component PCA (Pyrrolidone Carboxylic Acid)

INCI: PCA.

A highly hygroscopic NMF component present in all three water-based formulas alongside the amino acid blend. Synergy Note: PCA provides the most potent humectant character in the NMF system; valine broadens the amino acid diversity of the same environment - hydration and biochemical completeness working in complement.
