What is Isoleucine?
Isoleucine is an essential branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) - a classification it shares with leucine and valine. The "branched-chain" designation refers to the structure of its aliphatic side chain, which forks rather than extending in a straight line. This structural feature gives isoleucine a more hydrophobic character than polar amino acids like serine or threonine, positioning it as the most lipophilic member of the Sweet Chemistry amino acid complex and providing a distinct contribution to the blend's overall molecular diversity.
In the skin, isoleucine is present as a component of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) and as a structural amino acid in a wide range of skin proteins. Its essential status means it cannot be produced endogenously and must be sourced externally - in the skin's case, primarily from dietary protein that reaches the dermis and epidermis via the vasculature, and secondarily from the filaggrin breakdown process that liberates free amino acids into the stratum corneum.
Research on branched-chain amino acids in skin biology has also explored their role in the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway, which is studied in connection with protein synthesis and cellular renewal processes.
