What is Rosehip Seed Oil?

Rosehip seed oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of Rosa rubiginosa, a wild rose species native to the Andes region of South America. It is one of the most extensively researched botanical seed oils in skincare, with a well-documented fatty acid profile dominated by linoleic acid (approximately 44-50%) and alpha-linolenic acid (approximately 33-38%) - making it one of the richest combined sources of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids among commonly used skincare oils.

Unlike rosehip fruit oil (which is pressed from the entire hip) or rosehip extract, rosehip seed oil is derived specifically from the seeds and contains a higher concentration of the polyunsaturated fatty acids most studied in connection with barrier support and skin appearance. It also contains naturally occurring tocopherols (vitamin E), carotenoids, and a small amount of trans-retinoic acid precursors - giving it a broader active profile than its basic fatty acid composition alone would suggest.

What does Rosehip Seed Oil do for the skin?

Rosehip seed oil's primary contribution to skin is its polyunsaturated fatty acid content - specifically the linoleic and alpha-linolenic acids that form the foundation of its established research profile. Linoleic acid is the essential fatty acid most directly associated with the ceramide EOP-dependent architecture of the barrier's lamellar lipid matrix; alpha-linolenic acid is the omega-3 fatty acid associated with a more settled skin surface. Together, these two fatty acids give rosehip seed oil a dual barrier and comfort-supporting character that makes it relevant across dry, combination, and reactive skin types.

The carotenoid content of rosehip seed oil - including beta-carotene and lycopene - contributes antioxidant character to the formula's botanical layer, working alongside the dedicated enzymatic antioxidants (CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid, resveratrol) and tocopherol to create a multi-source antioxidant environment. This overlap between rosehip's natural antioxidant content and the formula's active antioxidant system means that the oil is never functioning in isolation - it is part of a coherent antioxidant architecture rather than a standalone claim ingredient.

In the Oil-Serum at greater than 5%, rosehip seed oil is one of the primary contributors to the formula's essential fatty acid payload alongside evening primrose, red raspberry, and sea buckthorn. Its high polyunsaturated content is complemented by squalane's oxidative stability in the formula - the saturated hydrocarbon helps buffer the reactivity of rosehip's polyunsaturated fatty acids in the anhydrous base.

Synergy Note: Rosehip seed oil is one of the richest botanical sources of linoleic acid in the formula - the free fatty acid and the whole oil together provide linoleic acid through both isolated and whole-botanical delivery routes simultaneously. 

Fat-Soluble Antioxidant Tocopherol / Tocopheryl Acetate

INCI: Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Acetate.

Present across all four formulas as the primary lipid-phase antioxidant system. Synergy Note: Tocopherol is studied in connection with protecting polyunsaturated fatty acids from lipid peroxidation - rosehip's high linoleic and alpha-linolenic content makes it the botanical in the formula most directly benefiting from co-formulation with Vitamin E. 

Barrier Lipid Ceramide EOP

INCI: Ceramide EOP.

Present in the Hydra-Cream and Lipid-Cream as the acylceramide containing esterified linoleic acid. Synergy Note: Rosehip seed oil delivers linoleic acid as part of a whole oil; Ceramide EOP is the finished ceramide that contains linoleic acid in its molecular structure - they both address the skin's linoleic acid needs from different formulation angles.

Skin-Identical Lipid Squalane

At 7% in the Oil-Serum and functional levels in both creams. Synergy Note: Squalane's chemical stability as a saturated hydrocarbon complements rosehip's reactive polyunsaturated fatty acids - their co-formulation creates an emollient system that balances nourishing essential fatty acid delivery with oxidative stability.
