What is Panthenol?

Panthenol is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid (Vitamin B5), classified as a provitamin - meaning it converts to the active vitamin form (pantothenic acid) on and within the skin's surface through enzymatic oxidation. This conversion is well-documented and fast: panthenol is readily absorbed through the stratum corneum and oxidized to pantothenic acid in the epidermal layers, where it enters the cellular coenzyme A (CoA) pathway. Coenzyme A is involved in a range of biochemical processes associated with cellular metabolism, fatty acid synthesis, and tissue renewal - making panthenol's contribution in skincare a function of both its surface activity and what it becomes within the skin.

Panthenol has been used therapeutically in pharmaceutical wound care since the 1940s, and its safety and activity profile is backed by one of the most extensive clinical and safety databases of any cosmetic active. Its use across virtually every product category - from baby care to post-procedure recovery to everyday moisturizers - reflects the unusually broad consensus on its tolerability and performance.

The D-form (D-panthenol) is the biologically active enantiomer used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. At Sweet Chemistry, panthenol is formulated at a functional level in all three water-based formulas, sitting within the active layer of the ingredient list.

What does it do for the skin?

Panthenol is studied in connection with multiple complementary functions in the skin. As a humectant, it is associated with drawing water toward the stratum corneum and supporting the moisture-retaining environment of the skin's uppermost layers - working alongside glycerin, sodium PCA, and hyaluronic acid in the Sweet Chemistry water-based formulas as part of the layered hydration system.

At the barrier level, panthenol has been researched in connection with keratinocyte differentiation and the organization of the epidermis. Some research has explored its association with supporting ceramide production by keratinocytes - a relevant property in formulas that also deliver topical ceramides directly. In this sense, panthenol may support the skin's own barrier lipid environment from the synthesis side, complementing the topical ceramide delivery from the structural side.

Panthenol's most established research association is with tissue comfort and recovery. It is studied in connection with a more settled, less reactive-looking skin surface - and is a common inclusion in post-procedure and sensitive skin protocols for this reason. In the context of Sweet Chemistry's barrier-targeting formulas, this soothing association makes panthenol a particularly coherent inclusion: barrier-strengthening actives work most effectively when the skin surface they are working on is calm and receptive rather than reactive.
