What is Allantoin?

Allantoin is a naturally occurring compound found in the root of Symphytum officinale (comfrey), as well as in a range of other plant and animal sources. It was first isolated in the early 19th century and has been used in pharmaceutical and cosmetic preparations for over a century, accumulating one of the most extensive safety and activity records of any plant-derived skincare ingredient. Its use in wound-healing ointments and soothing preparations long predates modern clinical dermatology, and the scientific literature on its topical performance is now well-established.

At the molecular level, allantoin is a purine derivative - a small, water-soluble molecule with a bicyclic structure that interacts readily with the proteins in the skin's surface environment. This interaction is associated with its keratolytic and skin-softening properties: allantoin is studied in connection with loosening the bonds between corneocytes in the uppermost stratum corneum layers, facilitating a more even desquamation (skin cell turnover) process and producing a smoother, more refined surface texture. This mild keratolytic action occurs at lower concentrations and is significantly gentler than exfoliating acids - with no associated stinging, redness, or post-use sensitivity.

What does Allantoin do for the skin?
