What is Colloidal Oatmeal?

Colloidal oatmeal is produced by finely grinding whole Avena sativa oat kernels into a particle size small enough to remain suspended in water, creating a colloidal dispersion. Unlike regular oat flour, which settles out of suspension quickly, colloidal oatmeal remains evenly distributed in a formula, allowing its full range of bioactive components to make consistent contact with the skin's surface. It is one of the rare natural ingredients to carry formal FDA recognition as an over-the-counter skin protectant, based on decades of clinical use and a well-documented safety and efficacy profile.

The bioactive composition of colloidal oatmeal is more complex than its simple appearance suggests. It contains beta-glucan (a high-molecular-weight polysaccharide), avenanthramides (a unique class of phenolic compounds specific to oats), starches, proteins, lipids, and saponins.
