What is Arginine ?
Arginine is a semi-essential amino acid, meaning the body can produce it endogenously under normal conditions but may rely on external sources during periods of physiological stress, growth, or repair. In the skin specifically, arginine is present as part of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF) - the complex of hygroscopic molecules within the stratum corneum associated with the skin's intrinsic hydration management. It belongs to the basic amino acid category, distinguished by its guanidino side chain, which gives it a higher pH than most amino acids and makes it one of the most water-retaining members of the amino acid family.
As a skincare ingredient, arginine is used in its L-form (L-arginine), which is the biologically active enantiomer. At Sweet Chemistry, it is formulated as the most positively charged member of an eleven-amino-acid complex at 1% across the three water-based formulas. Its inclusion is deliberate - arginine's water-binding character and its role as the largest contributor to the NMF's amino acid cationic balance make it a meaningful part of the hydration system rather than a cosmetic trace.

What does it do for skin?
In topical application, arginine functions primarily as a humectant through its NMF contribution - associated with drawing water toward the corneocyte and supporting the water-retaining capacity of the stratum corneum. Its cationic character at physiological pH gives it a mild affinity for the negatively charged surface of the skin, which is studied in connection with enhanced surface residency compared to neutral amino acids. This means arginine may remain in contact with the upper skin layers for longer than some of its amino acid counterparts - supporting a sustained surface hydration contribution.
Research on arginine in the context of skin repair has explored its association with the polyamine synthesis pathway and its studied role as a precursor to proline - one of the three major amino acids in collagen's primary structure.
