What is glycerin?

Glycerin (glycerol) is a naturally occurring trihydroxy alcohol and one of the most fundamental components associated with the skin's natural moisturizing factor (NMF). In healthy skin, glycerin is produced endogenously through a process called lipolysis, where triglycerides in the skin's sebaceous glands break down into free fatty acids and glycerol - contributing to the barrier's lubrication and suppleness. When this internal production changes with age or environmental exposure, topical glycerin offers a way to externally supplement what the skin may no longer be generating at the same rate.

The glycerin used across Sweet Chemistry's water-based formulas is certified organic and plant-derived - sourced from vegetable oils rather than animal fats or petrochemical by-products. It appears as one of the primary base ingredients in the Hydra-Serum, Hydra-Cream, and Lipid-Cream, where it performs a structural role in the emulsion system while actively supporting skin hydration.

Despite being one of the most familiar ingredients in skincare, glycerin's performance is often underestimated. At functional concentrations within the right emulsion architecture, it is among the most clinically well-documented humectants available and one of the most thoroughly studied ingredients in cosmetic science.

What does it do for skin?

Glycerin functions as a humectant, meaning it is associated with attracting and holding water molecules from both the environment and the deeper layers of the skin toward the surface. This moisture-binding character is studied in connection with plumping the upper layers of the stratum corneum, which may visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines associated with dehydration and help create surface conditions more supportive of other actives.

Beyond surface hydration, glycerin has been studied in connection with barrier function. Research has explored its possible role in facilitating water movement through aquaporin channels - the proteins associated with water transport across cell membranes - and with supporting lamellar body formation in the epidermis, which is linked to barrier lipid organization. In this sense, glycerin is studied as more than a surface moisturizer; it is researched in connection with how the skin manages moisture over time.

Multi-Weight Hyaluronic Acid Sodium Hyaluronate Complex

INCI: Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Hydrolyzed Sodium Hyaluronate, Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate.

Four molecular-weight forms of hyaluronic acid present in the three water-based formulas. Synergy Note: Glycerin and sodium hyaluronate are both studied as humectants but at different penetration depths - combining them is designed to create a more complete hydration approach from surface to dermis.

Barrier Humectant Panthenol (Vitamin B5)

NMF Component Sodium PCA

INCI: Sodium PCA.

A skin-identical natural moisturizing factor component present in all three water-based formulas, working alongside glycerin to support the NMF reservoir that may be reduced through aging and cleansing. Synergy Note: Sodium PCA and glycerin are both understood to be endogenous NMF components; formulating them together is designed to closely mirror the skin's own moisturizing chemistry.
