What is Pomegranate Seed Oil?

Pomegranate seed oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of Punica granatum, one of the oldest cultivated fruits in human history and a plant whose fruit, peel, and seed have been studied extensively across nutritional, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic science. Its seed oil is among the most compositionally distinctive plant oils used in skincare - defined primarily by punicic acid, a conjugated linolenic acid that accounts for approximately 65-80% of its fatty acid content. Punicic acid (also known as trichosanic acid or omega-5 fatty acid) is an 18-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid with three conjugated double bonds in a specific geometric configuration that makes it structurally unique among commonly used plant oils.

This conjugated fatty acid structure is what distinguishes pomegranate seed oil from the more familiar linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid-rich seed oils in the Sweet Chemistry botanical panel. Where omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids have non-conjugated double bond systems, punicic acid's conjugated arrangement is studied in connection with enhanced antioxidant capacity and a different set of biological interactions at the skin cell level compared to conventional polyunsaturated fatty acids.

What does it do for skin?

At the barrier level, pomegranate seed oil's polyunsaturated fatty acid content contributes to the skin's surface lipid environment - supporting the broader essential fatty acid approach of the botanical oil panel alongside rosehip, raspberry, sea buckthorn, and cranberry seed oils.

The pomegranate fruit also contains ellagic acid, ellagitannins, and punicalagins - polyphenols for which there is research literature on antioxidant activity and skin tone associations. While these are found primarily in the peel and juice rather than the seed, trace amounts may be present in cold-pressed seed oil and contribute to its broader antioxidant character.
