What is Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) Fruit Extract?
Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) contributes to the Sweet Chemistry formulas in two distinct forms with complementary profiles: the fruit extract and the seed oil. These are not interchangeable - they deliver different active components from different parts of the same plant, and their combined presence across all four formulas reflects a deliberate approach to capturing both the polyphenol antioxidant dimension of the fruit and the essential fatty acid and oil-phase delivery dimension of the seed.
Raspberry fruit extract is rich in anthocyanins, ellagic acid, quercetin, and other polyphenolic antioxidants - the pigment-associated compounds that give raspberries their characteristic color and that are studied in connection with free radical scavenging and a more even-looking skin tone. It is part of the antioxidant superfood blend of berry and botanical extracts present above the 1% line in the Hydra-Serum and below 1% as a fruit extract in the cream formulas.
Raspberry seed oil is cold-pressed from the seeds of the same fruit and contains a fatty acid profile dominated by linoleic acid (approximately 54%) and alpha-linolenic acid (approximately 33%) - one of the highest combined omega-3 and omega-6 concentrations of any commonly used cosmetic seed oil. The Oil-Serum uses organic red raspberry seed oil at greater than 5%, reflecting its status as one of the most essential fatty acid-rich botanical oils in the entire lineup.
What does it do for skin?
Raspberry's two forms contribute through distinct but complementary pathways. The fruit extract's polyphenol content - particularly its ellagic acid and anthocyanin fractions - is studied in connection with antioxidant activity and a more even-looking complexion. Ellagic acid specifically has been researched in connection with the appearance of hyperpigmentation, and anthocyanins are among the most studied plant pigments for their free radical scavenging character. In the context of Sweet Chemistry's comprehensive antioxidant approach, raspberry fruit extract adds a whole-botanical polyphenol dimension alongside the isolated enzymatic antioxidants (CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid, resveratrol) and vitamin C.
Raspberry seed oil's contribution is at the barrier lipid level. With approximately 54% linoleic acid and 33% alpha-linolenic acid, it is one of the most polyunsaturated seed oils in cosmetic formulation - delivering both the omega-6 associated with ceramide EOP's lamellar architecture and the omega-3 associated with a more comfortable skin surface in a single botanical carrier. In the Oil-Serum at greater than 5%, alongside evening primrose, rosehip, sea buckthorn, and cranberry seed oils, it forms part of the most comprehensive essential fatty acid botanical panel in the Sweet Chemistry system.
The presence of raspberry in all four formulas - as fruit extract in the water-based products and as seed oil in the lipid-phase formulas and Oil-Serum - makes it one of the most consistently present antioxidant botanicals in the Sweet Chemistry lineup alongside rosehip seed oil.
FOUND IN
In All 4 Formulas
Raspberry appears in every Sweet Chemistry formula - as a polyphenol-rich fruit extract in the water-based products and as a linoleic and omega-3-rich seed oil in the cream and Oil-Serum formulas.
Nourishment - All Skin Types
Barrier Repairing Hydra-Serum Raspberry Fruit Extract (above 1%) - 1.0 oz / 30 ml
The Hydra-Serum delivers raspberry fruit extract as part of the antioxidant superfood complex, alongside cranberry, blueberry, blackberry, elderberry, apple, açaí, and amla extracts in a 40%-active emulsion for all skin types.
Hydration - Dry to Normal
Elasticity Reinforcing Hydra-Cream Raspberry Seed Oil (Organic, above 1%) + Raspberry Fruit Extract - 1.7 oz / 50 ml
The Hydra-Cream delivers both raspberry seed oil (above 1%) and raspberry fruit extract, contributing essential fatty acids and polyphenol antioxidants alongside 3% Matrikynes® peptides and 2% THD ascorbate.
Hydration - Dry to Dehydrated
Elasticity Reinforcing Lipid-Cream Raspberry Seed Oil (above 1%) + Raspberry Fruit Extract - 1.7 oz / 50 ml
The Lipid-Cream delivers both forms of raspberry within the nourishing emollient complex - seed oil contributing essential fatty acids alongside shea butter, jojoba, and sea buckthorn; fruit extract contributing polyphenol antioxidants to the full-spectrum formula.
Nourishment - Dry to Combination
Barrier Repairing Oil-Serum Red Raspberry Seed Oil (Organic, >5%) - 1.0 oz / 30 ml
In the Oil-Serum, organic red raspberry seed oil is one of eleven organic botanicals each present at greater than 5% - one of the richest combined omega-3 and omega-6 sources in the formula, contributing to the most comprehensive essential fatty acid botanical panel in the Sweet Chemistry system.
WORKS TOGETHER WITH
Essential Fatty Acid Linoleic Acid
INCI: Linoleic Acid.
Present as a free fatty acid in the Hydra-Serum and Oil-Serum alongside raspberry seed oil, which itself delivers a high linoleic acid concentration via its seed oil matrix. Synergy Note: Raspberry seed oil and free linoleic acid both contribute to the formula's omega-6 essential fatty acid approach - whole-oil botanical delivery and isolated free fatty acid delivery covering the same barrier lipid need from two formulation directions.
Polyphenol Antioxidant Resveratrol
INCI: Resveratrol.
Present in all three water-based formulas as part of the enzymatic antioxidant trio. Synergy Note: Raspberry fruit extract's ellagic acid and anthocyanins are polyphenol antioxidants studied through different pathways than resveratrol's stilbene character - together they broaden the polyphenol antioxidant coverage of the formula beyond what any single polyphenol source provides.
Botanical Seed Oil Rosehip Seed Oil
INCI: Rosa Rubiginosa (Rosehip) Seed Oil.
Present in all four formulas as the other primary high-polyunsaturated botanical seed oil in the Sweet Chemistry system. Synergy Note: Raspberry seed oil and rosehip seed oil have complementary polyunsaturated fatty acid profiles - raspberry is particularly high in omega-3 (alpha-linolenic), while rosehip brings a more balanced omega-6 and omega-3 combination. Together they provide a broader essential fatty acid botanical spectrum.
Fat-Soluble Antioxidant Tocopherol / Tocopheryl Acetate
INCI: Tocopherol, Tocopheryl Acetate.
Present across all four formulas as the primary lipid-phase antioxidant. Synergy Note: Raspberry seed oil's high polyunsaturated content makes it among the botanicals most susceptible to lipid peroxidation - tocopherol's fat-soluble antioxidant character is directly relevant to protecting both the seed oil's active components within the formula and at the skin's surface.
