What is Sorbitan Olivate?

Sorbitan Olivate is the second component of the Olivem 1000 emulsifier system, produced by esterifying olive oil fatty acids with sorbitol - a sugar alcohol derived from fruit. While Cetearyl Olivate provides the primary emulsification and lamellar structure-forming character of the system, Sorbitan Olivate contributes the hydrophilic counterpart that enables the two components to co-create the characteristic lamellar liquid crystal architecture that defines the Olivem system's skin interaction profile.

The chemistry of the pair reflects the HLB (hydrophilic-lipophilic balance) principle of emulsifier design: Cetearyl Olivate is relatively lipophilic, while Sorbitan Olivate's sorbitol head group adds sufficient hydrophilicity to create a balanced emulsifier pair that can organize oil and water phases into ordered lamellar structures rather than conventional globular droplet emulsions. The specific ratio in which the two are formulated is critical to the lamellar architecture - they are not interchangeable or independently effective and are always listed together in formulas where the Olivem system is used.
