What is Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate?

Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate (SLL) is an anionic surfactant produced by reacting lactic acid with lauric acid - a C12 fatty acid found in coconut and palm kernel oil - and neutralizing the resulting ester acid with sodium hydroxide. The product is a sodium salt with an amphiphilic molecular structure: a hydrophilic lactic acid head group linked through an ester bond to a hydrophobic lauric acid tail. What does it do for skin?

Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate performs two complementary functions in the Sweet Chemistry cream formulas. As an emulsifier, it contributes to the stability of the oil-in-water emulsion system - working alongside the primary olivem-based emulsifiers (cetearyl olivate and sorbitan olivate) and the rheology modifiers (carbomer, xanthan gum, polyvinyl alcohol) to maintain the even distribution of actives throughout the formula from manufacturing to last use.

As a skin conditioner, SLL's lactic acid-derived head group is associated with a smooth, comfortable skin feel at the point of application - contributing to the cushioned satin finish of the Hydra-Cream and the emollient radiant finish of the Lipid-Cream. Its conditioning character is milder and more surface-compatible than many conventional surfactant conditioners, which can disrupt barrier lipids at higher concentrations. At the below-1% concentrations used in these formulas, SLL contributes conditioning skin feel without any meaningful surfactant stripping.

The lactic acid component of Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate is also associated with mild pH-buffering character - consistent with the broader lactate-based pH support provided by sodium lactate in the same formulas.
