What is sodium lactate?
Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid - produced by neutralizing lactic acid with sodium hydroxide, converting the mildly acidic free acid into its stable, non-acidic salt form. In the skin, lactic acid and sodium lactate are endogenously produced components of the natural moisturizing factor (NMF), where they collectively account for approximately 12% of the NMF's total composition by weight - making them the second most abundant NMF component after the free amino acid fraction.
The distinction between lactic acid and sodium lactate in formulation is meaningful. Lactic acid at meaningful concentrations is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) with exfoliating and surface-renewal properties, but also a degree of potential sensitivity for reactive skin types at higher use levels. Sodium lactate, by contrast, carries none of the exfoliant activity - it is the buffered, stable salt form that delivers the NMF hydration benefit of lactic acid without any surface-renewal or acid-associated activity. This makes it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, at the concentrations used in NMF-restoring formulas.

What does it do for skin?
Sodium lactate functions as a hygroscopic humectant, associated with drawing water molecules toward the stratum corneum and supporting the water-binding capacity of the skin's uppermost layers. Its lactate ion is particularly effective in this role at physiological conditions - contributing meaningfully to the NMF's overall moisture-binding capacity alongside PCA and the free amino acids it is co-formulated with.
Beyond hygroscopic humectancy, sodium lactate contributes to the maintenance of the skin's mildly acidic pH environment - the acid mantle. The lactate ion acts as a weak pH buffer, helping to stabilize the skin's surface at the slightly acidic pH range (approximately 4.5 to 5.5) associated with optimal barrier enzyme activity, antimicrobial defense, and barrier lipid organization. In the context of a formula delivering ceramides and phytosphingosine - ingredients whose integration into the barrier is studied in connection with this pH environment - sodium lactate's pH-supporting role is a quiet but relevant formulation contribution.
Research has also associated lactic acid-derived compounds with improving the appearance of skin texture and hydration over consistent use - though at the NMF concentrations used here, the contribution is hydration-focused rather than exfoliant. Within Sweet Chemistry's independent clinical study, statistically significant improvement in skin hydration was observed in 89% of subjects - a result attributable to the cumulative, multi-component NMF system of which sodium lactate is one consistent element.
